Why Do We Have Difficulties in Our Lives?

Psalm 46 “God is our refuge and strength,
a very present help in trouble.

2 Therefore we will not fear though the earth gives way,
though the mountains be moved into the heart of the sea,

3 though its waters roar and foam,
though the mountains tremble at its swelling. Selah

4 There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God,
the holy habitation of the Most High.

5 God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved;
God will help her when morning dawns.

6 The nations rage, the kingdoms totter;
he utters his voice, the earth melts.

7 The Lord of hosts is with us;
the God of Jacob is our fortress. Selah

8 Come, behold the works of the Lord,
how he has brought desolations on the earth.

9 He makes wars cease to the end of the earth;
he breaks the bow and shatters the spear;
he burns the chariots with fire.

10“Be still, and know that I am God.
I will be exalted among the nations,
I will be exalted in the earth!”

11 The Lord of hosts is with us;
the God of Jacob is our fortress. Selah”

As we, Christians, live through life, one of the most puzzling questions we wonder about is, why did God create the tree of knowledge of good and evil? Even if He knows that Adam and Eve would take that fruit and consume it, why did He create the fruit? Like those questions, as we live through life, we ask ourselves these same questions. As we live through life, why do we go through such hardships? God knows that we will stumble and fall and suffer, so why would He have us go through such obstacles and hardships?

Psalm 46;1-3 “1 God is our refuge and strength,
a very present help in trouble.

2 Therefore we will not fear though the earth gives way,
though the mountains be moved into the heart of the sea,

3 though its waters roar and foam,
though the mountains tremble at its swelling.”

How much suffering would the person who wrote the book of Psalms gone through to write about mountains crumbling down and even about the valley of death. (Psalm 23:4“Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil”)

As we live through life, we go through pain and suffering; so, when we pray, we usually ask God to help us avoid suffering, stress, and worry. Even so, no matter how much we pray for this, some type of worry or concern will find a way to get to us. Even why, as we pray, do we go through hardships? It is because God loves us so much. The hardships we go through is for us to be able to, to give us the ability to sympathize and empathize with other people. Parents who have children do not just automatically do everything for their children. They don’t carry their children even as they become adults. The children must learn how to walk; and when learning how to walk, they will fall, stumble, and trip. Even so, in the end they will eventually learn how to walk. Through suffering, it is also so that we are able to have some sort of responsibility and strength; so that we are not spoiled. Though God can do everything and anything for us, through suffering we are able to experience God’s presence and His love, and even we become closer with God.

Psalm 46:10-11“Be still, and know that I am God.

    I will be exalted among the nations,

    I will be exalted in the earth!

The Lord of hosts is with us;

    the God of Jacob is our fortress. ”

A confession like this comes out of suffering with the hope and faith that God will help us and give us strength through the hardship and suffering, then later, no matter how big or small the hardship, we go to God. Then through the suffering, when we come across other people who have gone through something similar, we are able to sympathize, understand, and help them.

In our lives, when we come across unimaginable hardships, let’s keep faith and pray to God for help and strength. As we pray for God’s help and strength, we must also do everything we can with our ability; and when things turn out great we must thank and give glory to God, but when things don’t turn out as the way we wanted or when things don’t turn out the way you planned, it is because there is a reason for it to happen and there is meaning behind it.

As we live through life, let’s have faith and trust in God no matter what.

Matthew 5:13 – 16 “13 “You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot. 14 “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead, they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”
